- January 13: The Family Guy episode Trump Guy first airs, in which the Griffin family meet U.S. President Donald Trump. The episode is controversial because it satirizes Trump and his administration. [1] [2][3]

- 91st Academy Awards:
- Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wins the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.[4]
- Bao by Domee Shi and Becky Neiman-Cobb wins the Academy Award for Best Animated Short.[5]
- Urbanus, De Vuilnisheld, an animated film based on the Flemish comic strip Urbanus, premiers.[6]

- March 3: In The Simpsons episode 101 Mitigations Guillermo del Toro is special guest voice.[7]
- March 8: Following the release of the controversial 2019 documentary film Leaving Neverland, which details allegations against the late pop singer Michael Jackson of child sexual assault, The Simpsons producer James L. Brooks announces that the 1991 The Simpsons episode Stark Raving Dad (which had Jackson as a special guest voice) will be pulled from circulation.[8] He explains to The Wall Street Journal: "This was a treasured episode. There are a lot of great memories we have wrapped up in that one, and this certainly doesn't allow them to remain. I'm against book-burning of any kind. But this is our book, and we're allowed to take out a chapter."[8] Simpsons writer Al Jean says he believed Jackson had used the episode to groom boys for sexual abuse.[9]
April
- April 28: In The Simpsons episode D'oh Canada the family travels to Canada. However, the episode causes controversy among New Yorkers because of a satirical song parody mocking the city.[10]

- May 12: In The Simpsons episode Crystal Blue-Haired Persuasion Werner Herzog is special guest voice.[11]

- July 17: An arson attack at Kyoto Animation Studio leaves several deaths and wounded victims.[12] Animator Yoshiji Kigami goes missing. [13][14] On 24 July, his mother declares that he has been uncontactable since the fire.[14] Naomi Ishida and Yasuhiro Takemoto die in the fire.[15][16][17]
October
- October 4: South Park is banned in China, after the episode Band in China mocked the country and its government. [18][19][20] Parker and Stone issue an sarcastic apology in response.[21]
