Mulberry Academy Shoreditch (formerly known as Green Spring Academy Shoreditch and Bethnal Green Academy) is a co-educational academy for students aged between 11-19 based in Bethnal Green[1] in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, in East London. It previously has been called Daniel Street School, Daneford, Bethnal Green High School, Bethnal Green Technology College, Bethnal Green Academy and Green Spring Academy Shoreditch). On 1 September 2018, the academy transferred to the Mulberry Schools Trust led by Dr Vanessa Ogden.

Ms Ruth Holden was appointed to the post of Executive Principal of Mulberry Academy Shoreditch from 1 September 2018.

History

Bethnal Green High School

The school used to be a single sex boys school, however between 1996-1997 after lengthy consultations and votes, the school accepted girls. Complying with rules, the school name changed from Daneford to Bethnal Green High School. New school uniforms were designed to reflect the change, the new blazers were dark green, shirts were white, trousers were black and ties were diagonal dark green and gold stripes.

Bethnal Green Technology College

The school's name was changed again, this time to Bethnal Green Technology College, as the school had acquired specialist status. The school's uniform had stayed the same although the badge had changed slightly from "BGHS" to "BGTC" with a more modern font.

The indoor gym was opened in 1998.

Bethnal Green Academy

In January 2012, the school became an academy, and changed its name once again to Bethnal Green Academy. The school has a Sixth Form for students aged up to 19.

In December 2012 the Academy was inspected by Ofsted and was judged as being "an outstanding school".

In the news

In February 2015 three female students from the school travelled to Syria via Turkey.[2] This followed the disappearance two months earlier of another of the school's female students who is thought to also be in Syria.[3] In March 2015 a judge made four female students at the school wards-of-court to prevent them leaving Britain. During a week long hearing, in which counter terrorism specialists at the Metropolitan Police also gave evidence, Social workers at Tower Hamlets Council told the judge the girls might travel to areas in Syria controlled by the Islamic State.[4]

Green Spring Academy Shoreditch

In 2015, after the above incident was widely reported in the press, the academy chose a new name - Green Spring Academy Shoreditch. The boys' uniform is the standard black trousers, blazer with emblem, school tie and black accessories. The girls' is essentially the same with the option of a skirt or black shalwar kameez, and black hijab.

The school was proud of its status of being outstanding school and its outstanding examination results at GCSE. In February 2016, the schools minister Nick Gibb wrote a letter to the headteacher congratulating the school on its 2015 results, praising “the fantastic progress made by your pupils”. 82% of the pupils achieved five good GCSE passes, including in English and maths, and the school's performance on the Progress 8 benchmark was "one of the highest in the country"[5]

Examination malpractice

An allegation of exam malpractice was investigated by the Department for Education. On 10 February 2017 the Academy Trust, announced that the headteacher Mark Keary and a number of deputy heads had been suspended. The Department for Education said: “Following an investigation at Green Spring academy in Tower Hamlets, exam malpractice has been identified resulting in disciplinary action being taken". Extra management has been brought in to ensure that current pupils will still be allowed to take the 2017 examinations.[5]
