Commemorative coins of Malta

Malta since its independence in 1964 from the United Kingdom it has issued several commemorative coins denominated in the Maltese Lira. In 1972, as soon as the Maltese placed aside their former colonial's currency, the British pound and adopted the Maltese lira, Malta issued the first commemorative coin denominated in the Maltese lira. The Jean De La Valette commemorative coins issued in 2007 were the last Maltese commemorative coins to be denominated in the Maltese lira as Malta joined the eurozone on 1 January 2008. Most of the coins issued by Malta are made up of gold or silver and sometimes of Copper and Nickel alloys.[1][2]
