Earthshot prize

The Earthshot prize is an annual environmental award in five separate categories. It was launched in 2020 by Prince William and Sir David Attenborough, with the support of a broad range of individuals and organizations dedicated to climate action.

Background

On 31 December 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced the Earthshot Prize, which will be given to five individuals or organisations who come up with impactful and sustainable solutions for earth's environmental problems between 2021 and 2030.[1] This project was formally launched in October 2020, and is slated to give £50 million over the next decade.[2]

Launched in collaboration with Sir David Attenborough, The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will run this project, through the support of philanthropists, environmentalists, conservationists, nature historians and others.

The prize's name is inspired by former US President John F Kennedy's "Moonshot"[3] - when he set a goal in 1961 to land American astronauts on the Moon before the end of the decade.[1]

The first ceremony is scheduled to take place in the autumn of 2021 in London.
