Paloma Rocío Castillo Astorga, known professionally as Paloma Mami, is an Chilean-American singer.

Early life

Paloma Castillo was born in Manhattan, New York, daughter of Jorge Luis Eduardo Castillo Jiménez and Andrea Miriam Astorga Valdivia from Rancagua.[1] She has an older sister, Sofía, who is a make up artist.[3][4] She began studying music, recording, and singing at the age of 8. She played the electric piano and took courses in drawing and painting until the age of 16 when she moved to Chile.[5][6] She chose her stage name, Paloma Mami, in high school, inspired by artist Drake's Instagram username.[7] After her parents separated, she moved to Santiago and began her musical career.[8][9][10]

Career

Castillo was a participant in the first season of Chilean talent show, Rojo, el color del talento on Televisión Nacional de Chile. In July 2018, she entered the competition. However, due to the terms of the contract offered by the channel, Castillo left the show after two appearances.[11]

Castillo independently released the single "Not Steady" with a music video in June 2018.[3][12] The song was written by Paloma Mami and Lesz. The song mixes styles including dancehall, trap, soul and R&B.[3] On September 2, 2018, she was the opening act for Arcángel at Teatro Caupolicán.[13][14] The following month, she signed with Sony Music Latin, becoming the first Chilean to sign with the label.[15][3][16]

Artistry

Castillo defines her music as Latin R&B and urbano. She incorporates elements of pop and trap.[17] She cites several people as influences including Bad Bunny, Drake, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse, Aaliyah and Ella Fitzgerald[17][18][19]
