Town Walls Tower

Town Walls Tower (officially Wingfield's Tower) is a building in the care of the National Trust in the county town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England in the United Kingdom.

History

The Town Walls Tower is the very last remaining medieval watchtower surviving on what were once the medieval fortified, defensive walls of Shrewsbury. The tower dates from the 14th century, a time when the town was subject to attacks from the Welsh, and, like Shrewsbury Castle, the tower was a means of observing the land around the town and the River Severn. By 1580 it became known as Waring's Tower, after the Waring family who leased it. The tower was later given the name Wingfield's Tower.

In 1816 it is known to have been the workshop of a watch maker named John Massey. It was converted into a dwelling in the 1860s by John Humphreys of Swan Hill Court opposite the tower, and provided accommodation for his coachmen. His daughter Rachel Humphreys donated the tower to the National Trust in 1930. Between 1930 and 1937 her gardener and his wife lived in the tower. From 1937 to 1954 it was occupied by Mrs. Janet Mitchell. From 1954 to 1967 it was occupied by Mrs. B Curtis. From 1968 to 2012 it was leased by Mr and Mrs Hector. It is now leased by Shrewsbury High School.
