Vesna Zmijanac (Serbian Cyrillic: Весна Змијанац; Serbian pronunciation: [ʋêsna zmijǎːnats]; born 4 January 1957) is a Montenegrin-born Serbian folk singer.[1] Recognised as one of the most popular Yugoslavian singers, she was dubbed the sex-symbol, fashionista and gay icon of the eighties.

Life and career

Vesna Zmijanac was born on 4 January 1957 in Nikšić, PR Montenegro, FPR Yugoslavia to father from Sisak, Croatia and mother from Kraljevo, Serbia. Her parents divorced when she was just a year old as they believed that they were too young to be married. Subsequently, Zmijanac was raised by her maternal grandmother, growing up in Vienna, Austria.

Zmijanac started singing in kafanas dotting Ibar highway soon after graduating from middle school. She was discovered by Šaban Šaulić, who helped her launch a professional music career. In 1979, Zmijanac released her first single, "Hvala Ti Za Sve" (Thank You for Everything), while her debut album, Ljubi Me, Ljubi, Lepoto Moja (Kiss Me, Kiss Me, My Beauty), was released in 1982. Throughout her career she has sold millions of records, won numerous awards and had several regional tours. She has also appeared in several films, hosted her own talk shows and participated in reality TV series such as Survivor Srbija VIP: Philippines (2009) and Farma (2016). In 2000, Zmijanac published her autobiography, "Kad Zamirišu Jorgovani" (When Lilacs Smell), titled after her 1988 hit duet with Dino Merlin.

Zmijanac was married to Serbian accordion player and composer, Miroljub Aranđelović Kemiš, who she allegedly divorced from because of folk singer Zorica Brunclik, who later married Aranđelović.[2] While married to her second husband, economist and former marketing chief of PGP RTS Vlada Jovanović, she gave birth to their daughter, Nikolija on 19 October 1989, who also became a popular singer.[3]
