An independent bookstore is a single location bookstore, or small bookstore chain, that is locally owned and operated, as opposed to a chain bookstore, which will have stores located in multiple markets in multiple states or nations, and corporate headquarters that makes many of the purchasing decisions for all the stores. The distinction can sometimes be imprecise but "independent" is a commonly used term in the book industry, and by the reading public.
