For local government purposes the geographic county has now been divided into the administrative non-metropolitan county of Somerset and the unitary authorities of Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset. This category refers to towns in the geographic county.
Somerset has two cities: Bath, founded in Roman Britain, and Wells, which has a medieval cathedral. The far north of the county has given some of territory to the modern city of Bristol, which is of similar population of all of the small towns in Somerset combined.
